Causes of dark circles under eyes and how to get rid of dark circles

dark eye circleDark eye circles, a rather common concern that many people are facing; those have this concern appear to be tired and old.  

Causes of dark circles under eyes can be grouped into two different categories: (1) vein related, and (2) pigmentation after inflammation.

Vein related cause:

There is poor blood circulation at orbital veins and because of insufficient oxygen carried in red blood cells; the blood is having slightly blue tone.  Those with prolonged staying up late or overnight habit, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis,  asthma will have dark eye circles. 

Inflammation related cause:

Skin around eyes under prolonged chronic inflammation that gives pigment precipitation.  Some of the reasons that give inflammation are as follow:

  1. Use allergic products such as cosmetic, face cream, eye cream, facial cleanser or contamination of nail polish from fingers.
  2. Products that "sting or irritate" such as Victoria A acid ointment, AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid, α-hydroxy acids, referred to as AHA or β Hydroxy acid, referred to as BHA), or improper makeup removing action that causes too much abrasion.  

Remedies for dark circles under eyes:

If it is vein related, then make sure there is enough sleep.  We need at least 6 hours sleep daily and time between 10 pm till 2 am is the best time beauty sleep as metabolism of skin under in this time frame is most active.  Thus, if enough deep sleep is obtained, it will be very beneficial to skin and same applies for dark eye circles.  Do eye masks that lessen dark eye circles and put on hot towel or hot water bag wrapped in towel around eyes for 10 to 20 minutes 3 to 4 times along with some eye massage after will improve blood circulation and lessen dark eye circles.  If it is inflammatory related, best to find out the root cause of inflammation in order to tackle concern more effectively.

Foods to eliminate dark circles under eyes:

  1. Vitamin C and Anthocyanin, flavonoid rich citrus fruits, tomato, grapefruit, and lemon will strengthen and stabilize small veins and improved dark eye circles.  
  2. Evening Primrose Oil can calm inflammation. Take antioxidant rich food and food with Vitamin A (red wine, onion, green tea, citrus fruits); Selenium (Sesame, mushroom); Vitamin E (green vegetables, whole grain, malt, sesame, peach, sunflower seed, egg yolk, rape seed oil, peanut, chestnut, cashew nut, pine nut, walnut, pistachio, almond); Vitamin A (milk, egg yolk, green vegetables, plum).
